HubbleCast  Observing the Universe through the eyepiece of a telescope is one thing, but recording the observations for posterity is something quite different. Originally astronomers used pen and paper to draw what they saw, but the human eye is a lousy detector and our brain can play tricks on us. Astrophotography, first explored in the mid-nineteenth century, has proved to be a powerful, objective way of recording telescopic images with the advantage that long exposures revealed much more than the eye could ever see. But the true revolution arrived with electronic detectors and digital image processing.

HubbleCast  Galaxies gone wild. One of the big mysteries in astronomy is how galaxies grow and evolve over time. Collisions between galaxies are thought to be key events that shape their development. A stunning collection of 59 new images of colliding galaxies has been released to mark the 18th anniversary of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. They give us a unique insight into how galaxies collide to form larger galaxies.

Hubble's Expanding Universe Red Shifts The Big Bang  Before 1919, most scientists held that the universe was only as large as the Milky Way and that it was a constant size. Then, in 1919, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble — aided by a technologically advanced 100-inch telescope — was able to discern individual stars within what he believed to be a nebula, a fuzzy cloud of light composed of cosmic gases. After calculating that the distance to these stars from Earth was much further than the known reaches of the Milky Way, he concluded that the stars were part of a galaxy separate from our own. The idea that our galaxy was just one of many galaxies changed forever the way we view our place in the universe.

Earth Hour 2009  Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour quickly grew into a global observance. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions.

Cassinis Continued Mission  NASA's Cassini spacecraft is now a nearly a year into its extended mission, called Cassini Equinox (after its initial 4-year mission ended in June, 2008). The spacecraft continues to operate in good health, returning amazing images of Saturn, its ring system and moons, and providing new information and science on a regular basis. The mission's name, "Equinox" comes from the upcoming Saturnian equinox in August, 2009, when its equator (and rings) will point directly toward the Sun. The Equinox mission runs through September of 2010, with the possibility of further extensions beyond that. Collected here are 24 more intriguing images from our ringed neighbor.

The Big Picture  Hurricane Ike just rolled across Cuba, and soaked parts of Haiti - both regions still reeling from recent Hurricane Gustav. Ike appears to be weakening now, but is headed toward the Gulf Coast of the U.S., and may yet strengthen. The crew aboard the International Space Station was able to take a photo of Ike from 220 miles overhead last Thursday - one in a long series of great NASA photographs of hurricanes from space. Nick Pope Secret History   SECRET HISTORY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM’S UFO PROJECT, with Nick Pope. In 1950 the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence commissioned an official study into the UFO phenomenon. The MOD’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Henry Tizard ordered this initiative, and scientific and technical intelligence personnel carried out the study. In the aftermath of a skeptic versus believer debate that raged at the heart of government, the MOD set up a UFO project to research and investigate the phenomenon. The project was modeled on the USAF's Project Blue Book, and although less well-known, survives to this day. Nick Pope stewarded this work from 1991 to 1994, and his lecture will reveal the secret history of the British Government's UFO project.
