![]() | After my brain haemorrhage I found the internet to be invaluable in all aspects of my life. One of the problems I suffer as a result of my brain injury is a reluctance to venture outdoors. If you have a physical disability it makes the problem even worse. |
Approximately 40% of survivors of a brain haemorrhage suffer from some kind of physical disability. The internet provides a wonderful opportunity for people in our position by providing a wide range of services accessible from the comfort of your own home.
Below are some links to the best providers in my opinion who offer various internet services.

History Of Electricity and Technology With a life changing development as huge as electricity it becomes important to know how such a development originally came about. The first known observation of electromagnetism was by the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus in 600 BC when he noticed iron's attraction to a magnetic “lodestone.” Not knowing the science behind the phenomena he attributed the magnetism to the lodestone's soul. As scientific knowledge and exploration grew so too did the understanding of the forces behind magnetism and electricity. The first concrete observation of the relationship between electricity and magnetism took place in 1820 when it was discovered that a current carrying wire wrapped around an iron bar created a magnetic field- this was the first electromagnet. In 1865 James Maxwell published A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field, tying together equations describing electricity and magnetism into a unified field of electromagnetism. Albert Einstein, in 1905, took Maxwell's equations a step further and used them to show that light moves at a constant speed (300,000 km/sec) regardless of the observer's velocity, overturning classical Newtonian physics and forever changing the way we understand the universe. Below are some of the major developments, in chronological order, in the search to understand electromagnetism. Recommended by Sarah Anderson.

I Survived The human body is a miracle; though you may disagree if you're sitting there in the throes of an allergy attack or a hangover. The truth is your body can take a lot of abuse, and we've all heard amazing stories of people living through hacked off limbs, extreme temperatures and even falling out of airplanes. So how much punishment can the human body take? Well, under certain circumstances you can apparently survive...

Celebrities Migraines can cause reversal of vision phenomenon when a person sees everything upside down. In such cases, after migraine attack stops normal vision comes back. Strangely, for human brain it's more difficult to digest the image of a person flipped vertically, rather than the image where the face stays intact while the head and the rest of the body are flipped vertically. No matter how unusual such edit looks the person on the right is usually more recognizable than his unedited copy on the left.
Photoshop celebrities and politicians upside down while their face stays intact, as in this example (by Mundo).

Dance of a Thousand Hands There is an awesome dance, called the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, which is making the rounds across the net. Considering the tight coordination required, their accomplishment is nothing short of amazing, even if they were not all deaf. Yes, you read correctly. All 21 of the dancers are complete deaf-mutes. Relying only on signals from trainers at the four corners of the stage, these extraordinary dancers deliver a visual spectacle that is at once intricate and stirring. Its first major international debut was in Athens last year at the closing ceremonies for the 2004 Paralympics.

The Big Picture In its brief lifespan of only 13 days, Hurricane Ike wreaked great deal of havoc. Affecting several countries including Cuba, Haiti, and the United States, Ike is blamed for approximately 114 deaths (74 in Haiti alone), and damages that are still being tallied, with estimates topping $10 billion. Many shoreline communities of Galveston, Texas were wiped from the map by the winds, storm surge and the walls of debris pushed along by Ike - though Galveston was spared the level of disaster it suffered in 1900.
Mount Redoubt Beginning March 22nd, 2009, Alaska's Mount Redoubt, began a series of volcanic eruptions, and continues to be active to this date. Ash clouds produced by Redoubt have pushed 65,000 feet into the sky, disrupting air traffic, drifting across Cook Inlet, and depositing layers of gritty ash on populated areas of the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage, about 180 km (110 miles) to the northeast. Mount Redoubt has erupted at least five times since 1900, with the most recent event taking place in 1989.

John Kanzius Water Fuel Cell/Cancer Treatment You saw it here first!
John Kanzius discovered that his radio frequency generator could release the oxygen and hydrogen from saltwater and create an incredibly intense flame. He placed a test tube filled with ordinary salt water into a radio-wave generator, blasting the salt water with 200 watts' worth of directed radio waves. Within seconds, a blue flame erupted from the top of the test tube. It then turned bright white like a blowtorch's flame and burned for several minutes at about 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,600 Degrees Celsius)- the melting point of Titanium.
If this invention works out, the ramifications could be enormous. Cars could run on engines powered by salt water instead of gasoline. Hydroelectric plants could be built along almost any shoreline.
Update John Kanzius died from pneumonia on February 18, 2009, at a hospital near his winter home near Sanibel, Florida.

Cricket I don't like cricket I love it. These were the days when men were men, clothes were tight, every cricketer looked over 40 and Ian Botham ruled the world. This clip shows the final innings of the match, but to put things into some perspective, Australia had a first innings lead of 227, England followed on and scored 356 (with Botham scoring 149 not out) and Australia needed just 130 runs to win the match. So much chaos has been caused over a huge local Christmas display that its creator had to shut it down. Carson Williams put up the elaborate light display at his Mason home and choreographed it all to music. But so many people have been flocking to see it that it's caused a traffic jam in his subdivision. Williams tells FOX19 that there was a car accident in the subdivision Tuesday and the police couldn't get to the scene because of the congestion.

Speedtest Speedtest is a general use broadband connection testing site with many geographically dispersed servers to test against. Here we plan to demonstrate and beta test our latest creations such as latency, jitter, client location and distance to server calculations. Test your connection anytime and even store your results for future reference. If you have ideas on how we can make Speedtest more useful then please contact us.
Speedtest It uses Java and displays the results in a clear graph for easy comparisons to various types of connections (modem, DSL, cable, satellite, T1, T2, etc.). It doesn't, however, let you select a destination endpoint. Regardless, I found both WUGNET's and Speakeasy's tests to be the most useful and the most accurate.
Your results may vary, so try a variety of tests. Use a search engine to search for “speed test” or “speedtest” and you'll find lots of others.

Your added custom sections appear in the navigation bar at left. You can also set the number of headlines for each section from 1 to 9, or even delete unwanted standard sections - perhaps you find the Business news too depressing? If you wish, you can suppress the text excerpts and images to show only headlines. All customizations are stored on your own computer, not shared with Google. On the other hand, you can easily share your custom page with friends (or with yourself on a different computer).

Signs of the Times As a result of the upsurge in readers brought to the Signs of the Times page by our Flash animation on the Pentagon crash, we became very aware that many first time readers are somewhat surprised by the contents of the Signs of the Times, as well the content of our other sites. Many may never have been to what has come to be known as an "alternative news site" or to a site quite like 'Signs of the Times.org'. We would therefore like to introduce ourselves and our goals to any new readers that happen to stumble upon our page.
Slate Even the horribly misguided site redesign and seemingly less copious content can't keep us away from Salon, even if we have to watch a brief ad first. Why Google Mail? E-mail is supposed to be a productivity tool. So why spend time filing messages, then later trying to remember where you put them? And why delete important mail just to stay within some arbitrary storage limit?
Google Mail makes e-mail easy. With 2000 megabytes of free storage, you never need to throw messages away. And with a powerful built-in Google search engine, you no longer need to set up folders, file your mail, or remember where you stored your messages. Just search for what you want. You will not only find the message you have in mind, but all the other messages that are part of the same conversation – arranged in chronological order so you can easily put everything in context. And its free............
MSN / hotmail Free e-mail and a vast amount of various services.

ICQ This used to be the most popular downloaded program in the whole of the internet - over 200,000,000 downloads. My membership number is 4488007 and I thought that was high when I joined in 1997! Check out your number when you register! The ICQ programme comes bundled with a lot of additional add ware. You can get all the benefits of ICQ by using Trillian (see below) by registering through their programme for the service - without the nuisance of a large programme (13.5MB) with add ware.

BT Yahoo An excellent Internet Service Provider. Provides ADSL to most parts of the country, which I highly recommend. If your not on a broadband connection you have not been on the real time internet. BT has cranked up the speed of all its broadband services at no extra cost to its existing customers. From the 17/02/05 BT Broadband at £24.99 and BT Yahoo at £26.99 (with a 15GB usage limit) will both rise from 512Kbps connections to 2Mbps.
Wanado Broadbandaccess Twice as fast as standard broadband. Now up to 20 times faster than dial up connection. All options now 1Mbps - our fastest ever Broadband. £17.99 With Free Modem & Connection. Great price. 24/04/05
Trillian An excellent free instant messaging service. Allows you to connect to and use all the main instant messaging services at once - ICQ, MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, IRC and AOL. Can register easily for these services from the Trillian panel without having to download their programme. The other great advantage of this free service is that it doesn't come bundled with spyware / adware which can slow down your system and invade your online privacy (e.g. ICQ is a 13.5MB programme full of adware, whereas Trillian is a 2MB programme that allows you to use ICQ - and other services with no adware).
The Free Dictionary The Free Dictionary now allows you to create your own personal home page by adding and removing, dragging and dropping, and "using or losing" existing content windows. HubbleCast Observing the Universe through the eyepiece of a telescope is one thing, but recording the observations for posterity is something quite different. Originally astronomers used pen and paper to draw what they saw, but the human eye is a lousy detector and our brain can play tricks on us. Astrophotography, first explored in the mid-nineteenth century, has proved to be a powerful, objective way of recording telescopic images with the advantage that long exposures revealed much more than the eye could ever see. But the true revolution arrived with electronic detectors and digital image processing.
HubbleCast Galaxies gone wild. One of the big mysteries in astronomy is how galaxies grow and evolve over time. Collisions between galaxies are thought to be key events that shape their development. A stunning collection of 59 new images of colliding galaxies has been released to mark the 18th anniversary of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. They give us a unique insight into how galaxies collide to form larger galaxies.
Hubble's Expanding Universe Red Shifts The Big Bang Before 1919, most scientists held that the universe was only as large as the Milky Way and that it was a constant size. Then, in 1919, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble — aided by a technologically advanced 100-inch telescope — was able to discern individual stars within what he believed to be a nebula, a fuzzy cloud of light composed of cosmic gases. After calculating that the distance to these stars from Earth was much further than the known reaches of the Milky Way, he concluded that the stars were part of a galaxy separate from our own. The idea that our galaxy was just one of many galaxies changed forever the way we view our place in the universe.

Earth Observatory Videos Over the past decade, the number of people on Earth shot up by more than 13 percent, to nearly 6.8 billion people. To make room for all the hungry, breeding, CO2-emitting bodies on our small planet, we’ve ravaged Earth's surface with staggering feats of deforestation, irrigation and urbanization — and NASA satellites have captured it all. Here are a few videos, compiled from images posted on NASA’s Earth Observatory, of some of the most impressive conquests of man over environment.

Earth Hour 2009 Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour quickly grew into a global observance. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions.
Cassinis Continued Mission NASA's Cassini spacecraft is now a nearly a year into its extended mission, called Cassini Equinox (after its initial 4-year mission ended in June, 2008). The spacecraft continues to operate in good health, returning amazing images of Saturn, its ring system and moons, and providing new information and science on a regular basis. The mission's name, "Equinox" comes from the upcoming Saturnian equinox in August, 2009, when its equator (and rings) will point directly toward the Sun. The Equinox mission runs through September of 2010, with the possibility of further extensions beyond that. Collected here are 24 more intriguing images from our ringed neighbor.
The Big Picture Hurricane Ike just rolled across Cuba, and soaked parts of Haiti - both regions still reeling from recent Hurricane Gustav. Ike appears to be weakening now, but is headed toward the Gulf Coast of the U.S., and may yet strengthen. The crew aboard the International Space Station was able to take a photo of Ike from 220 miles overhead last Thursday - one in a long series of great NASA photographs of hurricanes from space. Here are some of the best, from the past several years.

Question of Origins During the past century, much of the world has accepted the theory of Evolution as fact. Yet the molecules-to-man theory has no direct evidence to support it at all. Origins provide overwhelming evidence in favor of Creation. The theory of Evolution has been applied to most scientific fields and this video thoroughly exposes the blind speculation and evolutionary bias in three of these areas of science including: Cosmology, Chemistry, and Biology. This visually rich, full production reveals conclusive evidence that the universe and all life were created by a Supernatural Being, and that the God of the Bible is that Creator. Features widely-travelled Creationist speaker, Roger Oakland, who makes the issues easy-to-understand for lay people. Various scientific experts share evidence and proofs.

Stephen Hawking Here he asks some Big Questions about our universe -- How did the universe begin? How did life begin? Are we alone?
Stephen Hawkings Universe "All my life, I have been fascinated by the big questions that face us, and have tried to find scientific answers to them." If, like me, you have looked at the stars, and tried to make sense of what you see, you too have started to wonder what makes the universe exist. The questions are clear, and deceptively simple. But the answers have always seemed well beyond our reach. Until now.

Big Bang This was our first HDV short animation film "one second before the big bang", here presented to you in a small 480x270 resolution. This video was produced as an experiment in fobots animation, and - being a unique cocktail of ancient mythologies and futuristic graphics - it soon became a cult classic on the web, with over 300,000 views and a tidal wave of emotional comments.
Although we just made it for fun and tried to see it as a cosmic and spiritual fairy tale, many people believed it to be a sectarian propaganda movie, which off course it is not.

Please be aware that the animation contains adult language and national stereotypes that will be offensive to some readers, hilarious to others.

Life in the Universe? This is the first episode of a series on life in the universe. Looking for life in the universe isn't like looking for your car keys. It's hard to know where to even start. The best place to start is probably by NOT trying to find alien civilizations, but rather ANY kind of life we can.
The problem is, civilizations live and die in the blink of an eye compared to the life cycles stars. They could come and go and we'd never know.

NASA's Apollo TV Lies Revealed - PART 2 This is Part 2 of a multi-part series - be sure to watch Part 1 first!
This second segment is an answer to some skeptics who have claimed that in Part One, all I did was cherry pick a few lucky coincidental examples that appeared to coincide with the quindar tones. The only way to adequately respond to that ridiculous charge is to demonstrate over and over and over again that the quindar tones CLEARLY are related to the video footage - directly contradicting NASA's official claims (outlined in Part One
NASA's Apollo TV Lies Revealed - PART 3 This third segment of "The Truth Behind The Tones" begins to examine the various editing techniques that were used to disguise, obfuscate, and erase many of the quindar tones in the Apollo GCTA lunar surface television footage. Appreciating this component of the cover-up is vital to your understanding of the depth and magnitude of the Apollo TV lies. Back in Part 2, I conclusively demonstrated that NASA has indeed LIED to the world about the true purposes of the quindar tones you hear in the GCTA footage, and in Part 3 you will see examples showing the various editing techniques they exploited in order to erase or cover up the majority of the quindar tones that were actually being created by the digital editing system.

Giant UFOs On February 28, 1994, an Air France pilot, his crew and passengers witnessed a brightly-glowing red and brown disc-shaped object while flying to London. Estimates of the disc's size were between 800 and 1,000 feet long, more than three times the size of a 747. On April 25, 2007, the captain of a passenger plane crossing the English Channel observed two bright-yellow flat objects for more than 15 minutes. He is astounded by their size, which he claims could have been as much as a mile wide. A pilot from a separate aircraft corroborated the story. The team takes to the skies to probe some of the largest UFO sightings ever recorded

Nick Pope Secret History SECRET HISTORY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM’S UFO PROJECT, with Nick Pope. In 1950 the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence commissioned an official study into the UFO phenomenon. The MOD’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Henry Tizard ordered this initiative, and scientific and technical intelligence personnel carried out the study. Nick Pope's lecture will tell the story of this study, and explain how a number of senior political, military and scientific figures become embroiled in discussions and disagreements over policy on UFOs, and over the true nature of the phenomenon itself. In the aftermath of a skeptic versus believer debate that raged at the heart of government, the MOD set up a UFO project to research and investigate the phenomenon. The project was modeled on the USAF's Project Blue Book, and although less well-known, survives to this day. Nick Pope stewarded this work from 1991 to 1994, and his lecture will reveal the secret history of the British Government's UFO project.

Because it’s intention is to be a free running assault on everything ‘we’ have ever thought of as defined and ‘real’. For the very first time in humankind’s ‘known’ histories on this planet, we humans...children of this overall Universe are becoming aware of something together. Nothing works or means anything the way it used to. We are now in the ‘Informational Age’ tumbler of incessant change, and looking at all things familiar as breaking up. But, it had to come to this...eventually...if our ignorance and bondage was ever to be exposed and overcome.

Thousands of people make reports yearly of strange lights performing impossible manoeuvres that traditional earth-bound aircraft, commercial, military, etc; could never accomplish. Welcome to Scotland Scotland is divided into three main regions; the Highlands, the Midland Valley and the Southern Uplands. The cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee together with numerous towns, most of the population and the majority of Scotland's industry is located within the Midland Valley. This broad valley averages 50 miles across and runs WSW to ENE across the centre of the country. It is geologically distinct from the surrounding regions, being composed of Devonian Old Red Sandstone, peppered with ancient volcanoes, as against the older sedimentary rocks forming the Southern Uplands or the ancient metamorphic melange, comprising the Highlands to the north.
